the MOJO series

About the artist

Kiini Ibura Salaam is a writer, painter and traveler from New Orleans, Louisiana. A prolific short story and essay writer, Kiini found it challenging to maintain her literary output after the birth of her daughter in 2002. Kept up at night fretting about how to use her creativity, Kiini picked up her paintbrushes after a five-year hiatus from visual arts.

Opening this new creative stream reconnected Kiini with her artistic self. Each stroke she dedicated to completing the MOJO series taught Kiini that she needn't cling to one form of artistry. By allowing her creativity to flow naturally, she found an artistic mojo that is neither one-dimensional nor static.

About the series

Each painting in the MOJO series is named after the address of a location where mercurially creative spirits were alive and thriving, whether it be the home of friends who are particularly creative, or Kiini's own past addresses in inspiring foreign countries, or the address of a club where many nights were spent communing with the magic of music. The MOJO series celebrates the magic in life, the strength of creativity and the power of the human spirit.

In the spirit of creativity!
